Augusta has two city dog parks, at Pendleton King Park and Valley Park, , and the Riverwalk, canal trails and Phinizy Swamp are all open to leashed dogs, Visit Augusta says. Everywhere outside those dog parks, the city’s code says a dog in public must be on a leash and with a person.

From Augusta’s animal ordinance:
- On the street, on a leash. It is unlawful for a dog to be on the public streets except on a leash and with a person, or inside a vehicle, cage, crate or other container (Sec. 4-1-19).
- No running at large. No animal may be out of control, unattended off its owner’s property or running at large. Off-leash dogs are allowed in the city’s off-leash dog parks (Sec. 4-1-18).
- At home, a dog must be securely enclosed, or on a leash, or off leash only under voice command with its owner close by.
- Pick it up. Owners must remove their animal’s waste from public walks, recreation areas and other property right away.
- Hot cars. It is unlawful to leave an animal in a parked vehicle in a way that endangers it; the code presumes danger after five minutes when it is above 85 degrees or below 35 degrees outside (Sec. 4-1-32).
Any animal found stray or running at large is seized by Animal Control (Sec. 4-1-20).
