Big storms

Augusta has lived through what Georgia Power called the most destructive hurricane in its history. After Hurricane Helene in late September 2024, the company said Augusta was the area most heavily hit, with extensive flooding and tree damage, and that about 65% of affected customers in the Augusta area had power back by Oct. 3, 2024, while statewide the figure was above 90% (Georgia Power release). Georgia Power said then that restoration would take multiple days in many areas because of the damage, so check the map for your ERT.

Staying safe

Georgia Power’s safety advice after storms:

  • Watch for downed wires; debris and fallen trees can hide them.
  • Never touch a downed wire or try to pull branches off power lines.
  • Do not step in standing water or saturated ground where lines may be down.
  • Stay away from chain-link fences, which a downed line out of sight can electrify.
  • Never try to repair your own service connection.
  • Move over a lane for utility trucks stopped on the roadside; it is Georgia law.

Report a traffic signal with no power to Augusta 311.
